Panama
is a study in contrasts that will be felt as you visit ancient, old and
modern sectors of the city. Personally we find the old to be reminiscent
of New Orleans and great fun to browse in. The locks are a big attraction
and the accompanying lecture very informative. We suggest the excursions
outside the city -- to the free zone for a shopping experience, to San
Blas, to the resort island of Contadora or to the mountain retreat of
David.
For full enjoyment of your trip, we offer the following information.
Climate
Tropical, with trade winds keeping the temperature moderate most
of the time. The dry season is December through March.
Clothing
Take light rain gear such as plastic raincoat, light weight umbrella and
appropriate foot wear for the light tropical rains. Cotton sportswear
is comfortable for days and dinner attire for city nights. You will want
a light wrap for evenings anywhere and a heavier sweater for the mountains.
Luggage
We always suggest an expandable case for the heavy shopper, and Panama
is a duty free Port.
Souvenirs
Gold items are popular but the most indigenous item is the "molas"
made by the Cuna Indians ... most fun to buy on San Blas islands but available
anywhere.
Money
And
Documents Convenience dictates that you travel with travelers checks of
$20 and a small amount of American dollars for easy tipping or exchange.
Leave bulk of money and a copy of your passport in the hotel safe.
Health
No inoculations are required. Medications for tummy upsets, colds,
etc. are easily available but the traveler may want to take their own
from home.
